Cleaning and Handling of Graphite Anode Plates

Graphite anode plates are highly popular in the electrolysis industry, used in processes such as the electrolysis of brine to produce caustic soda and chlorine, as well as in the production of metals like magnesium, sodium, and tantalum through molten salt electrolysis. Proper cleaning and handling of graphite anode plates are crucial to maintain their performance and longevity.

Preparation Before Cleaning:

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE):

  1. Wear an apron, rubber boots, gloves, and a safety helmet.
  2. Ensure gloves are rinsed with water, acid, and then water again before use.

Cleaning Solution Preparation:

  1. Add a solution of 109 NaOH (sodium hydroxide) into the cleaning tank.

Removing the Graphite Anode Plate:

  1. Open the cover of the anode rod.
  2. Gently remove the graphite anode plate from the anode rod with both hands.
  3. Transfer the plate to the cleaning tank and soak it for 30 minutes.

Cleaning Process:

Initial Cleaning:

  1. After soaking for 30 minutes, remove the graphite anode plate from the solution.
  2. Place the plate flat on a wooden rack.

Scrubbing:

  1. Use 240#-320# water sandpaper to scrub the surface of the graphite anode plate.
  2. Hold the anode plate with one hand and gently press the sandpaper with the other.
  3. Rinse with tap water while scrubbing to remove all dirt.
  4. Ensure the anode hook’s conductive part is also clean.

Final Rinse:

  1. After scrubbing, rinse the entire plate with running water.
  2. Inspect for any remaining stains and re-clean if necessary.
  3. Empty the cleaning tank and rinse it with tap water.
  4. Soak the cleaned graphite anode plate in pure water.
  5. Once cleaned, hang the anode plate back on the anode rod and cover it.

Precautions:

Handling:

  1. Handle the graphite anode plates gently to prevent breakage.
  2. When extracting or installing the plates, always move them vertically to avoid contact with the anode rod.

Safety:

  1. Ensure no production activities occur during the extraction or installation of anode plates to maintain safety.

By following these steps and precautions, you can effectively clean and maintain graphite anode plates, ensuring their longevity and optimal performance in electrolysis applications.
